Owyhee Watershed Council BBQ

The Owyhee Watershed Council hosted a Grand Opening Open House on September 12, 2007 for area farmers and community members. They took advantage of the lovely fall weather and held a BBQ on the south patio. The council served beef hot dogs with all types of garnishes, fresh salads, cold beverages, and delicious carrot cake for dessert.

Local musicians provided entertainment throughout the afternoon and drawings were held for door prizes.

After the BBQ, the council held it's monthly meeting outside on the lawn. Not quite the meeting room, but it was too nice of a day to go inside!
 

Family Thanksgiving Dinner

A local family used the Two Rivers Community Center to hold their Thanksgiving Dinner. The huge kitchen provided plenty of room for a large buffet and several cooks!

The main conference room held long tables decorated in a fall theme and a TV to entertain the men with football.

Riverside Electric Christmas Party

Riverside Electric held their annual employee Christmas Party in the Two Rivers Community Center. Caterers were brought in to provide a lavish buffet in the large kitchen, propane heaters warmed up the south patio, and a wet-bar and tables were arranged and decorated in the main conference room. There were approximately 75 people in attendance and it was a wonderful evening.

Other Events

• A baby shower was held recently for a local young mother. The organizers were quite pleased with the size of the facility.

• The Class of 1966 held their class reunion at the community center with a BBQ and other activities revolving around the old and new elementary schools. Classmates enjoyed being so close to the schools, and some even camped at the park!

• Riverside, Inc. used the community center to hold a two-day training for employees. Tables and chairs turned the main room of the community center into a classroom. It worked perfectly!

• Birthday parties in the park with plenty of room for inflatable jumping houses and games.

Our Opinion: Showing real civic pride

More and more it seems some area residents are viewing civic duty with more than just a mere sense of pride.  A good case in point is a recent effort in Adrian to turn an empty lot into a park.

The effort, spearheaded by Adrian-area residents Carl Hill and Dennis Daugherty, was designed to develop a chunk of vacant land that primarily served as a lot for trucks during the past few years in Adrian.

After only a few weeks, the area has grass and more than 15 trees leafed out.

Hill and Daugherty, though, did not do it all alone. In fact, the duo received help from Adrian community members, local agencies and friends to make the project a reality.

What the effort really says about Adrian and area residents is clear: Stepping up to complete a project to help the community is part of the fabric of the town.

That kind of civic pride can be hard to come by.  Fortunately, in Adrian, civic pride is an accessible commodity.

ADRIAN — The Adrian community is enjoying a new park thanks to the foresight of some longtime residents and the support of their neighbors and friends in a project to develop a parcel of ground that sat vacant for several years, serving as a parking lot for trucks.

The phrase “turning a sow’s ear into a silk purse,” is not really an exaggeration in this case, as a lawn and trees are now growing where there used to be just gravel and dirt at an open lot next to Oregon Highway 201, situated between Owyhee and Main streets.

“Eyesore,” is how most people described the location, Carl Hill, an Adrian area native and farmer, said. “It was a truck stop for 30 years,” Dennis Daugherty said jokingly.

The pair said they did not know if grass would grow on the lot or not. “Nothing had ever been grown on it,” Hill said. Their wives, Colleen Daugherty and Jenny Hill, are also partners in the project, Carl Hill said.

However, after only about three weeks of planting, the grass is up and it has been mowed once and more than 20 trees have leafed out.

The lot was purchased from the Corn family.

But the park is only part of the project, which includes the Two Rivers Community Center, which is housed in the former Catholic Church, which the duo also purchased. The small section of the building’s north end houses the Owyhee Watershed Council office, with remaining space available for community events and meetings. There is a kitchen area and meeting hall.

Hill and Daugherty said they wanted to do something for their community.

“We felt this was a need,” Hill said.

But, while Hill and Daugherty began the program and are still the main people behind it, the community is also lending a hand.  People donated their time to help out and are still handing them money. Donated funds for the park and the center are being handled through the Watershed Council, which already has nonprofit status, Hill said.  Elementary school students collected pennies to buy a Christmas tree, which is among those planted, Hill said.  The other trees were offered to families in the community for purchase, and they went very quickly, he said.  Plaques will be placed by the trees to honor those who gave.

The city vacated the alley and the church, as far as the roadway, so the two properties could be joined.

Northwest Farm Credit funded the irrigation systems and the planting of the grass, Hill said.  There is also sprinkler system for the lawn and a drip system for the trees.

New Grass!

The grass is up and looking terrific! Dennis and Carl mow the new grass on July 20, 2008.

Planting Grass

Grass was planted at the park on June 21, 2008. The ground was harrowed, grass seed planted, then a packer pressed the seeds into the ground. Thanks to those volunteers for their time and equipment!

Planting Trees!

Seventeen beautiful trees and two lilac bushes were planted at the park on June 7, 2008. Several people volunteered their time and expertise that morning, and it took only a few short hours to complete the task. The trees and shrubs were donated to the park by area families, and the beautiful blue spruce was purchased for the park by the elementary school students!

Work Begins on the Park...

The fall of 2007 brought the first major work on Two Rivers Park.

Three beautiful locust trees were planted on the west side of the community center in early October. These trees will help shade the community center on those hot summer afternoons and provide some light shade for the parking area.

Many yards of gravel were scraped from the future grassy area and it was leveled in preparation for water lines and trees. Compost was added to the soil shortly after it was leveled.

The Kitchen

The modern kitchen boasts two refrigerators, glass-top range, portable dishwasher, and plenty of room to serve delicious meals and snacks. There are two entrances to the kitchen: the west door opens to the parking lot and the south door opens to a concrete patio surrounded by lush grass and trees.

Main Meeting Room

The main meeting room features a large oak conference table, two dry erase boards, and plenty of room for additional tables and chairs.

Natural light reflects off the new paint to brighten this room. Ceiling fans keep the temperature pleasant.

This is the perfect place for family reunions, meetings, receptions, and craft bazaars.


The meeting room is flanked by the kitchen on one end and the Owyhee Watershed Council office on the other.

Community Center Remodel

In September 2006, the remodel project began on the community center. The first project was to build a wall separating the big room to create an office for the Owyhee Watershed Council. Electrical outlets, updated lights, data ports, wireless access, and a heating system had to be installed. Drywall was completed and the whole community center was painted. Below you will see the beautiful results.

Project Grants

Northwest Farm Credit Services awarded a grant worth $4,400 to be used for an irrigation system and grass for the park. The irrigation system has been designed and installation is set to begin this spring. Thanks, Northwest Farm Credit Services! We appreciate your support of our community and our project. It's with the help of good people and businesses like you that we are able to create a place for our community to enjoy.

Trees, Shrubs, and Benches...OH MY!

In order to complete the first stage of the park, we now need some help from the community. The park is in need of trees and shrubs that will be planted this spring. We would like to invite area families and community members to purchase a tree or shrub as a family donation or as a memorial to any loved ones. Purchases will be distinguished with engraved markers.


We also invite you to help purchase benches, picnic tables, and materials for the pavilion. Again, purchases or donations will be distinguished with engraved markers.

Future Home of Two Rivers Park

Two Rivers is pleased to announce the creation of a community park and community center in Adrian, Oregon between Owyhee Street and Main Street on Highway 201. The properties to be used for the community center and park are the former Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the property previously used by the onion packing shed for stacking extra onion bins.

The owners of Two Rivers have chosen to develop the properties into public use areas for the people of the community. At this time, the church has been remodeled to create an office in the north end for the Owyhee Watershed Council. The remainder of the building will soon be available for use by the community for meetings, reunions, receptions, and other events. The kitchen on the south end of the building has been equipped with appliances, as well as some tables and chairs. Currently, irrigation water rights are being secured for the park, and a community member has graciously donated landscape rock. Two Rivers has accomplished a great deal, but so much more must be done.

  

Our desire is to create a park that will suit the needs of our community members and provide a place for relaxation and enjoyment in the community. Here are a few of our goals:

• Level the area to be used for the park and fill with soil as needed
• Lay sprinkler lines in which to irrigate the park
• Lay sod or plant grass
• Plant several trees along the east and west borders of the park
• Build covered pavilions for picnics, barbecues, and parties
• Lay electrical lines to pavilions for lights and outlets
• Form gravel parking areas on the north and south sides of the park
• Landscape the park
• Create signs for the park
• Provide picnic tables and trash containers
•  Construct a gazebo or cover for picnic tables
• Provide restroom facilities of some kind
